Milk Hydrates Better than Water

What? Water isn’t the most hydrating drink? A new study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition has confirmed again how effective milk is for hydration compared to “sports” hydration drinks, juice, soda, coffee, and tea.

Plain water is, of course, good hydration, but because it is only water, it flows from the stomach faster and gets absorbed into the bloodstream. According to Ronald Maughan, a professor at St. Andrews School of Medicine, and author of the study, the food values in milk (fats, lactose and protein) slow down the trip through the stomach so that the body absorbs more liquid. The slower emptying of fluid from the stomach keeps hydration happening over a longer time period. And, the sodium in milk acts like a sponge, holding onto the water.

In addition, the protein in milk helps rebuild muscle after a workout.

Other studies have shown that Chocolate milk, with sugar and chocolate, offers a bonus for those who want the quick energy of chocolate and the nutrition and hydration of milk. It’s a great post-workout drink for athletes.
