Researchers from James Madison University have studied college soccer players, and found that low-fat chocolate milk was no different to a high-carbohydrate sports drink when it comes to athletic performance and recovery.
Athletes drinking milk also had lower amounts of a chemical marker in their blood that indicated muscle breakdown, possibly because the protein in milk helped rebuild their muscles.

Physiologist Joel Stagor, director of the Human Performance laboratory at Indiana University concluded that “when chocolate milk was consumed, the amount of time (athletes) could exercise until they were exhausted was similar or longer to when they drank fluid-replacement drinks alone.” The study was published in International Journal of Sport Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism and names chocolate milk as being an excellent post-exercise recovery aid.
In the lab, the athletes biked until they were exhausted, then they rested for a period of four hours, during which time they “each consumed low-fat chocolate milk, Gatorade, or the high carbohydrate sports drink Endurox R4. The results were positive. His research team concluded that the athletes who consumed chocolate milk performed just as well or better as those who drank the other beverages. The high carb and protein content in milk make it an incredibly effective recovery drink,” Stager concluded.³
“The chocolate milk proved to be just as effective a recovery ³ product as one commercial sports drink and almost twice as ³ effective as another commercial sports drink. Stager said chocolate milk would be particularly helpful for athletes such as swimmers, ³ long-distance runners and cyclists enduring long or intense practices, and for other athletes who practice more than once a day.” ³ Both sugars and protein in milk seems to be easily absorbed.
